REVIEW: Beets BLU Wireless Bathroom Scales

Beets BLU Body Composition Smart Smart Scale - Review

Beets BLU contacted me to review their wireless bathroom scales — they operate via Bluetooth to sync your weight, body fat, hydration and other measurements to your phone.

I already own two other sets of scales that I use for Personal Training clients, so initially I wasn’t that enthusiastic about doing a review…but after looking at the features, I became excited…

Design and build quality

Lets just say it’s gorgeous! It has a very sleek modern design, with reflective glass top, and blue display. It would look amazing in anyone’s bathroom. It feels like a well-built piece of equipment, and can handle up to 150 kg / 330 lbs.  The display can be set to show kilograms or pounds.

Getting Started

Firstly, I downloaded the Beets BLU SmartScale app to my phone and entered a couple of personal settings into the app, such as height, gender and date of birth.

If there are multiple people in your household, then providing they have a compatible mobile or tablet, they can all download the app and track their own results. It would be worthwhile to check compatibility of your device on the Beets BLU website before purchasing the scales.

Initially I thought that you could only store one person’s measurements per phone. However, I’ve subsequently discovered that if you click the settings wheel in the app > User Profile > Configure… you can click the ‘+’ symbol to add more profiles — great for a family, as not everyone will have a Bluetooth 4.0 compatible device. That’s also very handy for a Personal Trainer, as you can programme in all of your clients.

Weighing was simple:

  1. Open the app on your phone (and ensure Bluetooth is enabled)
  2. Select the person’s profile, if you have more than one profile programmed into your phone
  3. Step on and off the scale to activate
  4. Wait until the scale reads zero, then put your bare feet on the four silver coloured electrodes to begin weighing. If you don’t have bare feet, then the scales can only check your weight.

After a few moments, the scale’s display shows your weight, and a voice on your phone announces your weight, and percentages for fat and muscle mass. If you’ve weighed for a week or more, then it additionally voices the changes.

Your phone also shows some nice line graphs for your weight, fat, muscles, BMI, and lists your hydration levels, so you can easily see your changes at a glance. The scales store up to 360 records and sends the data to the app as soon as connection is established.

Another nice touch is that it also syncs with the apple Health app — just look in the Health app’s ‘Body Measurements’ category. However, it’s worth noting, that only the “General profile” (i.e. the first profile) in the SmartScale app is uploaded to the Health app.

How does it work?

Like most body fat scales, this one uses Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). It sends a small, painless current through your body, and measures the resistance, to calculate body fat, etc. It’s not advisable to use if you have a pacemaker or other electrical implants.

The data is transferred to your phone or tablet via Bluetooth 4.0 — you can find a list of compatible devices on the Beets BLU website here.

If you have a guest, the scale will still work without a phone or tablet; but it will only display your weight on the scale itself, and no other measurements.

What I like about the Beets BLU Body Composition Smart Scale

It’s beautiful, and feels well made. It’s reasonably priced and looks much more expensive than it is.

I like the fact that it connects to your phone or tablet, and you can easily see the progress you’ve made. Verbally announcing the stats is also a nice touch.  However, it is quite loud, so if you don’t want anyone in the house to hear your stats, then you can put your phone on vibrate, then it’s silent.

I think the graphs could get pretty addictive, so you’ll probably end up weighing yourself more days than you do at the moment.

Where I think it could be improved

It’s quite thin for bathroom scales, with small stabilising feet  – whilst this makes it aesthetically pleasing, you’ll need to use it on a solid, flat floor. It didn’t work on my slightly uneven tiled bathroom floor, and would likely struggle with carpet, so I used it on my wooden floor in the hallway.
