Starfish Sit Up for Sexy Abs

At the moment you can’t seem to scroll through Instagram, without seeing image after image of sexy abs. The Starfish Sit-Up is one of the exercises I use with my training clients. It’s a great exercise working both the abdominals and obliques.

How to do the Starfish Sit-Up for Sexy Abs

  • Lie on the floor on a mat or carpet, with your arms and legs outstretched
  • Put one palm face down (this will be your support arm)
  • Put the other palm face up (this will be your working arm)

  • Whilst keeping your supporting hand on the ground, bring your working arm diagonally across you as you sit up, and raise the opposite leg (still keeping the legs wide apart)
  • Tuck your hand around to touch the outside of your ankle

You may find it difficult to reach your ankle if you have very tight hamstrings, or if you don’t sit up enough.

If you suffer from lower back pain or have given birth in the last 12 months, then static and non-twisting ab exercises will be more suitable for you.

More difficult version of the Starfish Sit-Up

  • This time, bend your support arm and hold it lightly behind your head
  • The working arm is outstretched and palm up as before

  • Bring your working arm diagonally across you as you sit up, and raise the opposite leg (still keeping the legs wide apart)
  • Tuck your hand around to touch the outside of your ankle

You can also make this exercise more difficult by adding an ankle weight.

The Starfish Sit-Up is a great exercise and a favourite for many of my training clients. I hope you enjoy it too.
